Philadelphia 76ers Co-Owner Writes Letter to Judge in Support of Meek Mill
Meek Mill has received a ton of support from rappers such as JAY-Z and T.I. since his latest prison sentence, and now, a letter from the co-owner of the NBA’s Philadelphia 76ers supporting the Philly rapper has surfaced.
On Monday (Nov. 13), Sports Illustrated obtained a copy of 76ers co-owner Michael Rubin’s letter to Judge Genece Brinkley written prior to Meek’s controversial sentencing. In the letter, Rubin calls the Wins & Losses rapper a “good friend.” According to the owner, he has known Meek for more than four years, first meeting him at an NBA All-Star Game.
“As we sat together for the first time, he was peppering me with questions about business,” Rubin wrote. “I quickly saw that he had a genuine desire to learn, grow, and advance his career and find a way to have a positive impact on his community.” Rubin added that he had introduced Meek to the commissioner of Major League Baseball and the owner of the NFL’s New England Patriots, as well as his daughter and his mother.
Rubin also vowed his support for the rapper, writing, “I want you to know that I am personally invested in helping him so that he can help others.” He continued, “Please know that I am devoted to his future and to making sure he accomplishes the goals that you have set forth for him. He not only has a bright future but also a unique opportunity to inspire young men at a time when others are tearing them down. I would hate to him incarcerated for these violations. I truly believe that such a sentence would destroy his future.”
Rubin will also attended a Monday rally for the rapper which calls for justice for Meek and others. A flyer for the rally reads, “Our criminal justice system has failed Meek Mill and millions of others like him. We stand for justice.”
The Rally for Meek is scheduled for Monday at 5 p.m. at the Criminal Justice Center in Philadelphia. Rick Ross, legendary 76er Julius Irving and others are said to be planning an appearance.
