Afeni Shakur Dead At 69 – Tha Wire [VIDEO]

Today in Tha Wire, it's sad news to report today.  According to reports Afeni Shakur Davis, mother of rap icon Tupac Shakur, has died.  It's being reported that the Marin County sheriff's office responded to a call at Mrs. Shakur's home in Sausalito, Calif. late Monday (May 2, 2016) night.  It is believed that she had went into cardiac arrest.  The sheriff's Dept. stated that she was rushed to the hospital, but passed away just before 10:30 p.m. She was 69 years old.  An investigation is underway to determine the cause and manner of her death.

After 12 years of marriage she filed for divorce from her husband, Gust Davis, earlier this year.  TMZ reports the two were in the mist of a legal battle, as her husband was allegedly trying to get his hands on some of Pac's fortune.  It's being reported that she received $20,000 every month and that he was trying to get 50 percent of that in alimony.  Since Tupac's death in 1996 it's no secret that Mrs. Shakur has been the sole overseer of her sons estate, which reportedly takes in roughly $900,000 a year.

She's always had her sons back and represented him well over the years.  Exactly one after the rap legend died Afeni founded the Georgia-based Tupac Amaru Shakur Foundation, to celebrate his life and continue his legacy.  The foundation provides several art programs for young people across the country.  Mrs Shakur secured all of her sons unreleased material by starting the holding company, Amaru Entertainment.  In addition by launching the Makaveli clothing line, all the proceeds go directly back to Pac's foundation to support the charities operation.

Afeni Shakur, born Alice Faye Williams, seen some rough times.  The name change came after she moved to New York and joined the original Black Panther Party.  In 1969, she along with other members were arrested and charged with conspiring to bomb several city landmarks. Mrs. Shakur would be released on bail a year later.  It was at that time that she got pregnant for Tupac's father, William Garland.  A short time after that, her bail was revoked and she went back to jail.

Her case went to trial in 1971 and lasted for more than five months.  Not only did she act as her own criminal defense, she beat the prosecutions case and won her freedom in May of 1971.  A month later on June 16, she gave birth to her son and named him Tupac Amaru Shakur, meaning shining serpent, after the legendary king that ruled the Inca Empire in South America from 1471-1493.

Afeni Shakur.  May she rest in sweet peace.  She will live on in the 1995 song her son made to express his love and appreciation for her, "Dear Mama."
