Morehouse College was organized in Augusta, Georgia on this day. The iconic institution would later be to Atlanta after the new registration law in Tennessee abolished racial distinctions in voting.

Today could possible be the birthday of civil rights legend, social reformer, abolitionist, orator, writer, and statesman Frederick Douglass.  He was born into slavery and given the name, Frederick Baile.  After he purchased his freedom in 1845 and went on to become the greatest abolitionist of his time, he would later change his name to Frederick Douglas.
