The Calcasieu Parish Police Jury in partnership with local agencies announced Sunday, January 14, that they are opening two shelters for the homeless. The forecast for the coming days predicts freezing, which presents dangerous conditions and life-threatening temperatures for people forced to live outside.

If you or someone you know is experiencing homelessness during the week of January 15, two shelters are in place for citizens to get out of the frigid conditions. One is Water's Edge Gathering, located at 2760 Power Centre Parkway in Lake Charles, and the other is Sulphur Christian Community Coalition Center at 501 E. Burton in Sulphur.

The Water's Edge Gathering Church will open at 2 p.m. Monday, January 15, and remain open 24 hours daily until Thursday, Jan. 18 at 8:00 a.m. So, anyone in need of shelter is welcome to stay. In addition, three hot meals will be served each day, showers will be available, as well as laundry facilities during this time.

The Sulphur Christian Community Center shelter opened Sunday, January 14 at 6:00 p.m. and will be available for overnight stays only. Meals will be provided in the morning and evening. The shelter will close each morning at 7:00 a.m. and re-open each evening at 6:00 p.m. through the end of the freezing weather conditions.

Lunch will be served at the Community Center and it will be open to the public for regular use from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. However, no beds will be available during this time.

These warming stations and winter shelters are being provided by the Calcasieu Parish Police Jury in partnership with The Water’s Edge Church, Sulphur Christian Community Center, the Calcasieu Parish Sheriff’s Office, and the Lake Charles Police Department.
