Chicago rapper Chief Keef is in jail after a judge ruled Tuesday (Jan. 15) that he violated his probation when he held a gun during a video interview with music website Pitchfork.

In the clip, which has since been taken down, the 17-year-old rap star can be seen shooting off a Ruger 10/22 semiautomatic at a New York gun range.

During the two-hour hearing, Keef, born Keith Cozart, remained silent as Judge Carl Anthony Walker felt the video was a direct violation and ordered him to jail. “There is a clear record of a disregard for the court’s authority,” he said.

Keef’s probation stems from his conviction last January for aggravated unlawful use of a weapon for pointing a gun at Chicago police officers. As terms of his 18-month probation, the ‘I Don’t Like’ rapper is not allowed to have contact with guns, gangs or drugs.

After the hearing, Keef’s manager was not happy with the judge’s decision and when confronted by reporters outside of the courthouse he told them, “kiss my ass.”

In his defense, Keef’s attorney, Dennis Berkson expressed that his client didn’t violate “the spirit” of his probation when he was shooting off rounds at a gun range. He added that Keef’s label, Interscope Records arranged the interview while he was on a promotional tour. “Was it stupid? Yes. Did it violate the court order? No,” Berkson told the judge.

Keef will remain in county jail until his next hearing, which is on Thursday (Jan. 17).
