Mark Ruffalo was spotted on the Captain America: Civil War set last year, but it wasn’t long after that Ruffalo and Marvel’s Kevin Feige said that Hulk had been cut from the film, which is already a bit crowded with superheroes as it is — so much so, that fans have taken to calling it Avengers 2.5. But according to one Civil War star, Ruffalo might be making an appearance after all…or not. He may have just been confused.

There’s a lot going on in this quote from Anthony Mackie’s interview with BBC Radio 1. He addresses the abundance of superheroes in the Civil War, suggests that it could be the first superhero movie to win Best Picture at the Oscars, and…name-drops Mark Ruffalo:

Having seen the movie, it’s Marvel’s best movie thus far. And I’m being honest, if a Marvel movie sucks, a movie in the Marvel universe, I’ll tell you it sucked… Winter Soldier and Iron Man 1 are probably Marvel’s two best movies. I feel like [Civil War] beats both of those movies. It’s really, really good.

Because it’s more of an acting movie than an action movie, I feel like the story is very concise and interesting, and you get to see Robert Downey Jr and Chris Evans and Scarlett Johannson and Mark Ruffalo and everybody just do really, really good acting. And then there’s action in it. The great thing about being in a Marvel movie? They have really good actors. I mean, Don Cheadle is in the Marvel Universe! I think it might be the first superhero movie that might be up for Best Picture.

There are a few maybes to consider here: Maybe Mackie forgot that Ruffalo was cut from the film. Maybe he didn’t get the memo. Maybe Joe and Anthony Russo didn’t cut Hulk from Civil War entirely. Maybe it was an honest slip of the tongue — in which case, maybe Hulk is a secret, or maybe it was just a forgetful mistake.

There’s a lot of maybe in there.

There is, of course, the possibility that Hulk shows up in one of the post-credits tags, showing us where he disappeared to at the end of Avengers: Age of Ultron. Ruffalo is slated to appear opposite Chris Hemsworth in Thor: Ragnarok, so we might see how Hulk gets to Asgard.

In any case, there’s your fun bit of speculation for the day. And if Hulk doesn’t show up in Civil War on May 6, you can blame Anthony Mackie for getting your hopes up.
