The City of Sulphur, the City of Lake Charles and KPLC-TV are teaming up with former New Orleans Saint Mike McKenzie’s charity foundation to collect relief items for the victims of Hurricane Isaac — and you can help.

Southwest Louisiana knows what it’s like to be hit hard with a storm, and its people are giving to help those left in the lurch by Isaac.  Collections began over the weekend and are continuing daily at the Lake Charles Civic Center and the Old Tyme Variety Store at the corner of Ruth and Cypress in Sulphur.  Donations will be collected Mondays through Saturdays from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. and also on Sundays from noon to 7 p.m.

Here’s what is needed:

  • Non-perishable food items
  • Cleaning supplies
  • Household items such as towels, linens and pillows
  • Dog and cat food
  • School supplies
  • New pre-packaged socks, underwear, t-shirts, etc.
  • Personal hygiene products
  • Baby needs ,such as food, formula, diapers and wipes
  • First aid supplies
  • Bottled water
  • Monetary donations — check made payable to “City of Sulphur” with “Hurricane Isaac” written in the memo line

If any group or organization would like to participate in manning the drop-off site in Sulphur, please contact the Mayor’s Office at (337) 527-4505.  Individuals wanting to volunteer are encouraged to report to the drop-off site on any given day.

Mike McKenzie and his wife run the 34 Ways Foundation.  As it turns out, the pair know a little bit about being relocated due to a hurricane — they’ve evacuated here to Lake Charles in the past:
