When two of rap’s biggest stars collaborate, it feels like an event is approaching. Even though ‘Nothing Was the Same”s release is an event in itself, a lot of fans had their interests piqued when Drake revealed Jay Z was going to be a feature on ‘Pound Cake/Paris Morton Music 2′ — the standard edition-closer/sequel.

It was one of the first tracks fans heard on Sunday night (Sept. 15) before the album leaked in its entirety.

What wasn’t expected was the Ellie Goulding sample, which is featured prominently in background. It gives the track a feeling of luxury and cuts from the Wu-Tang Clan‘s famous ‘C.R.E.A.M.’ intercede as if to connect mainstream success with a sense of street credibility.

Drizzy’s verses don’t necessarily sound like he’s trying to establish credibility, but rather a rapper being satisfied with who he is while gliding over all.

“My classmates, they went on to be chartered accountants / Or work with their parents, but thinkin’ back on how they treated me,” he raps. “High school reunion might be worth an appearance / Make everybody have to go through security clearance.”

Hov drops a few serviceable bars of his own, twisting the simple image of a pound cake into symbols of success. He notably shouts out former Roc-A-Fella partner Damon Dash in his second verse.

“I’ve done made more millionaires than the lotto did / Dame made millions, Bigg made millions /Ye made millions, Just made millions,” he spits.

This all happens before Drake closes out the album in the ‘Paris Morton Music 2′ section.
