Additional Information

The Acadian Awakening Music Fest is a free weekend-long celebration and commemorative event showcasing Cajun culture, history and traditions throughout Southwest Louisiana, Friday-Sunday, Oct. 2-4. On Saturday, there will be events featuring five musical acts, historical talks and displays as well as food and art with activities specifically for kids from noon-2 p.m. in the Jean Lafitte Room at the Lake Charles Civic Center.

Kids can enjoy free face-painting with Louisiana symbols, murals to color, and the Bulber Youth Orchestra will have a musical petting zoo. There will also be an Acadian Passport Adventure, and everyone will receive a passport with historical facts about the Acadian people. Passport adventurers will be led to an exhibit by the Southwest Louisiana Genealogical & Historical Library where they will experience the 10 year trek of the Acadian people along with historical information about the war and deportation before getting a stamp on their passport. On hand to entertain in the Jean Lafitte Room will be music by the Cajun French Music Association Youth Band as well as tunes by Lesa Cormier & the Sundown Playboys.

Inside the Civic Center’s Exhibition Hall, the Opening Ceremonies will start at 2 p.m. featuring Gregor Trumel, Consul General of France; Marco Morency of Société National de l’Acadie; historical scholar Warren Perrin; and music by Barbe High Choir and Henry Heights French immersion students.

Starting at 3:15 p.m. musical act Sweet Crude takes the stage, performing progressive original music sung in French and English; followed by Rusty Metoyer & Zydeco Krush to mix in Creole traditions; and the event culminates on Saturday with Grammy winner Jo-EL Sonnier, performing at 7 p.m.

The festival is sponsored by the Lake Charles/Southwest Louisiana Convention & Visitors Bureau and the City of Lake Charles in partnership with the Cajun French Music Association, the Arts & Humanities Council of Southwest Louisiana, the Southwest Louisiana Genealogical & Historical Library, the French-American Chamber of Commerce, Henry Heights French immersion, Barbe High School choir and community volunteers.
