Meta spokesperson Andy Stone stated they were aware and working to solve the problem on X and various news outlets. So, what happened? Were we hit with a cyber attack? After some research the Thousand Eyes team--a Microsoft network performance monitoring system -- they don't think that was the case.

Rather, researchers for the tech company think something went left in the backend of the service. In a blog they shared,

 “ThousandEyes confirms that Meta’s web servers remained reachable, with network paths clear and web servers responding to users,”They went on to say. However, users attempting to login received error messages, “suggesting a backend service, such as authentication, as the cause of the issue,” the researchers said.

By 10:40 am more and more Meta users were able to access the social application. By 18:40 UTC (10:40 am PST), the incident appeared to be resolved, the researchers said. Other social sites had to pinpoint the outage to be where there were two-factor authentication (2FA) issues, and SMS codes not working on the site. atforms. 

DownDetector.com began reporting more than 300,000 outages around 10 am CT, with Facebook, Instagram, Ads Manager, and Meta Business Suite, according to Meta's website. Many users, including myself, had problems with passwords and logging in. Facebook was telling users their password was incorrect. With other platforms, the feeds didn't appear to be refreshing. ABC News reports Meta spokesperson, Andy Stone acknowledged there was an issue and released the following statement:

"We're aware people are having trouble accessing our services. We are working on this now."  Stone continued. "We are aware of an issue users are having logging into our platforms." Meta said. "Our engineering teams are aware and are actively looking to resolve the issue as quickly as possible."
