[UPDATE] Second Person Dead in Geismar Chemical Plant Explosion

[UPDATE 6/14 9:48 p.m.] A second person is now reported dead. The names of the two deceased are Scott Thrower, who died Friday in a hospital, and 29-year-old Zachary Green who died in the blast. Around 77 people were injured.

[UPDATE 1:08 p.m.] WAFB is now reporting that at least one person was killed in the blast and that the injury count has risen to 33.

[UPDATE 11:42 a.m.] At least 30 people have been taken to the hospital following the explosion. Residents are also being asked to remain in their homes with doors and windows closed, though the Department of Environmental Quality says that dangerous levels of harmful chemicals have so far not been detected in the air.

[ORIGINAL STORY] A fire and explosion ripped through a chemical plant in Geismar, Louisiana, this morning.

Iberville Office of Emergency preparedness is saying seven injuries have been reported in the blast.  It occurred at the Williams Olefins plant in Geismar.

This plant produces chemicals like ethylene and polymer grade propylene.

In April, an fire and explosion rocked the Central Texas town of West when the West Fertilizer plant blew up.
