Hip-hop has birthed some of the greatest poets of our time. By simply embracing a genre based on rhyming words and lyricism, rappers have made their mark in history considerably over the last 40 years. But it goes deeper than just matching syllables. From the start, MCs like KRS-One, Rakim and Chubb Rock set a standard when it came to their material. It's as if they had a poetic license to get behind the mic while others had to proceed with caution on their way to the booth.

While those guys helped lay the foundation in the game, the rappers that followed had to take a look at the blueprint or break out of the box to do their own thing. However, one thing the respectable guys in hip-hop all possess is an undeniable skill for creating lyrics that resonate. The most gifted MCs have crafted classic albums and been included in the G.O.A.T. conversations due to their lyrical abilities. Words speak volumes when they're delivered the right way and when it comes to hip-hop, a rapper's rhymes are their lasting legacy.

In a time when trap rappers are crafting the next turn up anthem, there are plenty of rhymers far removed from that subset; they don't need a club banger to get their point across. Instead, rappers like Common, Nas and Lauryn Hill possess poetic flows, can spit bars for a socially conscious track and kill the competition with ease. Just think of some of your favorite artists and how their material stands the test of time. More often than not, it's the artists with the solid metaphors, lyrical firepower and meaningful message that last for years to come. Don't forget, they know how to turn up too.

In honor of National Poetry Month, which marks its 20th anniversary this year, XXL highlights the projects that have made a strong impact due to the message and poetic vibes in the music. Here are 50 Great Albums From Rappers With Poetic Flows.
