Today is the nationally known holiday for Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. This is the day where folks line up around the world and partake in parades, special events and some simply reflect on the importance of this great man. Today while I sit here at my desk, I would like to reflect on what Dr. Martin Luther King Jr meant to me. More specifically what one of his most famous speeches "I have a Dream" meant to me.

The very first time I heard this speech was on one of my hometown radio stations back in Mississippi. I was a child, but there was something about his voice and his message that made me stop and take notice. Every word that came out of this man's mouth expressed passion for his art and his movement. It told me even then that we should all be able to get along, don't let race divide us and help put our fellow man. Even though the speech taught me about being a strong man, it also told me what kind of world we lived in. As I got older, I could understand it even more clearer and have had my dealings with racism and troublesome moments, but  I try to hold true to what he said and wanted to accomplish. We still have a long way to go and even though I am sure Dr. King envisioned it, I am sure he is happy that we were able to have our first ever black president and seeing the way that alot of these young men are becoming great role models and fathers to their kids. This speech inspired me to be a better father, husband, son and friend. It also told me that whatever I want out of life I can accomplish it, all I have to do is have dream. Today is more then a day off for some of us, this is a true day to honor someone who literally practiced what he preached. Today is King's Holiday and I am so proud to be alive to share my feelings about this day and about this man to all of you! Have a great day and be safe.
