Ice-T Speaks on History of ’99 Problems’ [EXCLUSIVE VIDEO]

Hip-hop legend Ice-T is credited as the forefather of gangsta rap, but he’s also the inspiration behind some of today’s most famous rap lines.

The most popular is Jay Z’s lyrics, “I got 99 problems, but a bitch ain’t one” from his 2004 single, ‘99 Problems.’

What most people don’t know is that Jay Z’s line actually originated from Ice-T’s classic 1993 rap song of the same.

Ice-T and his rock band Body Count remixed the Rick Rubin-produced track on their latest album ‘Manslaughter’ as a cheeky hat tip to Hov. The West Coast rhymer-turned-actor also uses it as a boobie trap for journalists.

“A lot of times we get interviewers and they go, ‘Did you get permission to do Jay Z’s record,” he explains. “And we’re like, ‘Bozo prize, motherf—er!’ I did that record 11 years ago before Jay Z.”

Ice-T adds that he was honored by Jay Z’s use of his rap lyric.

“No diss to Jay Z,” he said. “But there’s still a lot of people out there that don’t know that the original ’99 Problems’ was done by Ice-T.”
