Kendrick Lamar is set to rock the 2017 MTV Video Music Awards stage tonight and hopefully take home some trophies as well. With eight nominations, including Artist of the Year, there’s a likelihood that he will win something. But K.Dot is not worry about himself winning any awards, he’s rooting for his TDE labelmate SZA to take home a coveted moon person trophy for Best New Artist.

In an interview with MTV, Kendrick says SZA deserves to win Best New Artist for the hard work she put into her fantastic debut album, CTRL.

“I watched her slave over and over to make a masterpiece that not only represents her, but represents women all over the world,” he said. “[CTRL] is a record where it touched so many demographics — not only just women, but men. Something that we all can feel. It touched so many different spaces and connected with so many people. There’s nothing much more I can say — she needs to win.”

We can't argue with that.

However, SZA has some major competition in the Best New Artist category. R&B newcomer Khalid and rappers Young M.A and Kodak Black are also nominated in the field. Pop singers Julia Michaels and Noah Cyrus are vying for the trophy as well.

The 2017 MTV VMAs will air live from the Forum in Inglewood, Calif., tonight at 8PM ET.
