Five days after being arrested for the stabbing death of a homeless man named John Jolly, rap pioneer The Kidd Creole has been indicted for murder. The New York Daily News reported this development early Wednesday morning (Aug. 9).

Last week, it was reported that Creole, born name Nathaniel Glover, had used a small knife to stab Jolly twice in the chest and once in the head after the man had allegedly hit on him as he walked down a midtown street in New York City.  Jolly was taken to Bellevue Hospital, where he died a short time later.

Creole is a founding member of the legendary rap group, Grandmaster Flash and The Furious 5, and hip-hop’s legacy of detailing the strife found in the streets can most definitely be tracked to his clique. About 35 years ago the group released “The Message,” a track that examines the poverty-stricken conditions of the ghetto, which was pretty much the first track of its kind in hip-hop.

For their accomplishments, The Furious 5 were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame about 10 years ago. Unfortunately, Creole will likely be as remembered for his role in the death of Jolly as he is for his contributions to hip-hop.

Creole’s indictment is sealed and he’s due back in court for his next arraignment hearing on Aug. 23.
