Lake Charles’ Scariest Trails, Haunted Ships and Corn Mazes for 2012

Halloween’s on the way, and pretty soon, everyone will be looking to get the pants scared off of them.  Luckily for you, we’re stepping in to show you where you and your pants should be this Halloween.  These are the coolest haunts in the Lake Area for 2012.  You’re welcome.

The Lost Hollows
Cynthia and Larry Eagle

1. The Lost Hallows

3201 East Prien Lake Rd., Lake Charles

This is the newest addition to the area, but it also promises to be one of the coolest.  Cynthia and Larry Eagle have a 70-acre plot way at the back of East Prien Lake Road (Pass up Home Depot and the CFMA and just keep driving), and they’ve put it to good use.  Not one, but TWO haunted trails will wind through the property — one for kids, and one for the grown-folks.

The trails are filled with sets, haunted houses, graveyards, aliens, monsters, and just about everything you can imagine that’s terrifying.  Plus, imagine being out in the country in the dark, wandering from creepy place to creepy place.  Yeah, this one’s going to be a hoot.

OPEN:  October 5-27 on Fridays and Saturdays; from Oct. 28-31.  Gates open at 6 p.m., and the trails open at 7 p.m.

COST:  $5 to $15, and if you pay extra, you can jump to the head of the line or keep the actors from jumping out and scaring you.

The BLUDD Vessek
USS Orleck Naval Museum

2. The BLUDD Vessel (USS Orleck Museum)

604 N. Enterprise Blvd., Lake Charles

Take one decommissioned naval ship, turn off the lights, and the creep factor should just skyrocket on its own.  But no, they also have to add zombies, werewolves, spiders, and everything else that goes bump in the night.

Supposedly haunted by the “Bludd” family, this particular attraction should have you howling at the moon, or at least begging to be let out of a porthole.

OPEN:  Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays in October, also Oct. 30-31.  Gates open at 6 p.m., the ship opens at 7 p.m.

COST:  General admission $10, fast pass $25.  If you have PayPal, you can buy tickets online.

More details at the USS Orleck Naval Museum’s website.

Corn Maze
CM Farms (http://cmfarmsllc.com)

3. CM Farms Corn Maze

252 CM Farms Rd, PO Box 313, Dry Creek, LA 70637

Finally, this is the old-school way to do it.  CM Farms has been planting their corn maze (or technically a sorghum maze) for a while, and it’s pretty great.  The fun part is that there’s a mystery afoot — Farmer Joe is missing.  This is perfect for the kids.  It’s 10 acres of the spookiest hide-and-seek game you could ever play, and the whole family can get into it.  It’s a little bit of a drive, but it’s worth it.

OPEN: Fridays 6-11 p.m. and Saturdays 10 a.m. to 11 p.m. in October.

COST: Kids 3 and under Free; ages 4-64 $10; Seniors 65 and over, $8.  Additional attractions $5-$6 extra.
