UPDATE 2:46 p.m. -- Calcasieu Parish School Board officials said the lockdown of Prien Lake Elementary was also extended to include S.J. Welsh and Barbe High. As dismissal time nears, officials said they are preparing to release students as normal IF they ride school buses or are normally picked up by parents. Students who walk home from school will not be released from school until a parent or guardian comes to pick them up.

Officials said no incidents occurred under lockdown and students were not in harm's way. Lake Charles Police said they are still hunting for the armed robbery suspect who caused the lockdown. The suspect apparently struck a business along Nelson Road and remains at large. He abandoned his car in the vicinity of the schools, which led to the lockdown precaution.

ORIGINAL REPORT: We've verified reports from Lake Charles Police that Prien Lake Elementary on Nelson Road was put under lockdown this morning after a robbery suspect's car was found abandoned near the school's vicinity. Police said the measure was taken as a precaution and that students are not in direct or immediate danger at this time.

Under lockdown procedures, neither faculty nor staff may leave the premises. Sources say the robber remains at large, and for the moment, the school will remain under lockdown simply as a precaution while the investigation continues. We'll keep you updated as the situation unfolds.
