Louisiana State Police (LSP) Troop D will conduct a DWI/sobriety checkpoint on Friday, May 19, 2017, from about 8 p.m. - 2 a.m. at an undisclosed location within Calcasieu Parish. Their mission is “to detect and arrest impaired drivers before they cause injury or death to themselves or others,” said a LSP press release.

In 2015, 64 percent of fatal crashes investigated by Troop D involved an impaired driver. Alcohol consumption affects judgement as well as the skills needed to drive safely.

You should never drink and drive. Designate a sober driver before going where alcohol will be consumed. Be smart and save a life as well as your own. Don’t drive under the influence of any substance.

If you suspect someone of impaired driving, you are encouraged to dial *LSP (*577) from your cellular device, or simply contact a local law enforcement agency.
