Congratulations to the Lake Charles and Sulphur students who participated and won in the C-SPAN 20th Annual StudentCam Competition! This is a prestigious video documentary competition featuring 3,200 students from 42 states who were invited to compete.

Middle school and high school students competing in the C-SPAN's National Video Documentary were asked to address this year's theme, “Looking Forward while Considering the Past,” using one of the following prompts:

  • In the next 20 years, what is the most important change that you would like to see in America?
  • Over the past 20 years, what has been the most important change in America?

They were allowed to choose various critical topics such as social media, criminal justice, systemic racism, abortion, climate change, technology, and artificial intelligence.  by choosing a vital topic and creating a documentary on it

C-SPAN announced the winners today and for the 3rd year in a row, students from SWLA placed in the competition! Once again, congrats to the following local students for winning prizes in National Video Documentary:

Colby Jackson - Sulphur High School

  • Second Place
  • Prize - $1,500
  • Documentary - Guns in the Hands of Teens: Dereka Bell's Story,” about a house party shooting that left Dereka Bell, an innocent bystander, with a bullet in her head.
