The first Angola Prison Rodeo took place in 1965 and since the very beginning, it was clear, that this was no ordinary rodeo. It all began in an area built by the inmates and prison personnel to help pass the time doing something constructive. It gave the inmates an outlet to blow off steam and develop skills that otherwise would not have been available while in prison and serving hard time.

As the inmates worked with cattle and horses competing against one another in a variety of rodeo events from steer-doggin, bull riding, and calf roping something remarkable started happening, folks started coming from all walks of life to watch them ride. Before long, they had a full-fledged rodeo going in front of a sold-out crowd of spectators.
