Halo is an American Pit Bull Terrier, who's life got off to a very bad start.  In November 2013, he was rescued from his abusive owner, 20-year-old Tyler Scott Sanders in Lake Charles.  When Animal Services found him he had broken bones, a fractured skull and multiple pellet wounds.  He was then given to Jessica Single and Renee Smith with the Lake Charles Pit Bull Rescue and Halo not only recovered, he's now an advocate for the breed.

He celebrated his first birthday with a public party on July 12, 2014, at Prien Lake Park, and he has another party planned for this year. He is also training with the Positive Pit Project, to become a therapy dog and help educate others about animal abuse.

Deputy Chief Mark Kraus with the Lake Charles Police Department said, "Halo loves everyone.  He no longer limps to his kennel and cowers in a corner when a stranger enters the room. He doesn't shake in fear when he hears a man's voice. He is gentle with other dogs and children."

In April 2014, Sanders was sentenced to 10 years in prison with five years suspended, plus five years of supervised probation in connection with the theft and abuse of Halo. Lake Charles Pit Bull Rescue is still trying to pay his vet bills and currently accepting donations to pay them off.

The Positive Pit Project is a wonderful way to give man and dog a second chance at life. Thanks to Lake Charles Pit Bull Rescue, Lake Area K-9, and A Bridge to Life they provide service dogs to veterans suffering from PTSD.  All of the dogs are “rescued” dogs just like Halo.  The dogs are provided to the veteran as a donation, with all costs covered by us and/or a sponsor for the dog/veteran.
