Tinashe has fans in a tizzy on Twitter over comments she made about colorism. The R&B singer spoke to The Guardian in a new interview in which she addressed a myriad of topics included her oft-delayed debut album.

But during the interview the 24-year-old was asked about colorism. Tinashe revealed that she had to deal with being bi-racial in the music industry. She feels that she's not fully accepted by the black community because she is of mixed heritage.

“There’s colourism involved in the black community, which is very apparent,” she said. “It’s about trying to find a balance where I’m a mixed woman, and sometimes I feel like I don’t fully fit into the black community; they don’t fully accept me, even though I see myself as a black woman. That disconnect is confusing sometimes. I am what I am.”

Folks on Twitter disagreed with her assessment.

"Tinashe's remarks about colorism were dense. I wish she had used that time to talk about her privilege as a light skinned, mixed woman," wrote one person. Another user tweeted, "I don't think anyone cares about Tinashe being mixed. And being bi-racial surely isn't an impediment in the industry, girl wut?"

Elsewhere in the interview, Tinashe addressed the issue of warring Twitter "fan-tribes" who maintain their alliances to either Beyoncé or Rihanna. The "2 On" singer feels that fans are reluctant to embrace her because of their loyalty to either Queen Bey or RiRi.

“Recently, my cousin was with a friend of a friend, who was in high school, and she was like: ‘I’m a fan of Kehlani,’ but in a way that was like, ‘So I can’t be a fan of Tinashe, too,’" she explained. "Then my friend posed the question, ‘Why not be a fan of both?’ It’s kind of like sport; people feel like they have to pick a side.”

“There are hundreds of [male] rappers that all look the same, that sound the same, but if you’re a black woman, you’re either Beyoncé or Rihanna. It’s very, very strange," she concluded.

Fans on Twitter disagreed with that assessment as well. "It was either Tinashe or Kehlani...they chose kehlani. It's not because 'you aren't black enough'," wrote one fan. "Tinashe really is calling her lack of success reverse colorism when she's just not interesting. Look at FKA Twigs," tweeted one user.
