UPDATE:

After announcing plans to launch his own show giveaway in response to a bait truck in Chicago, Vic Mensa is sticking to his word. The rapper will give away thousands of shoes on Aug. 26.

"This Sunday my foundation @savemoneysavelife is giving away THOUSANDS of shoes on a Anti-Bait Truck in Englewood on 2050 W 59th St. Tell everyone you know in Chicago! If you weren’t aware, the police escorted a bait truck full of shoes through the hood on one of the cities most..," he wrote in a tweet with a photo detailing the event. "... violent weekends, showing just what they think of us. Strength is in numbers and power is to the people; we know our worth, and apparently the world does too. Shout to & for the solidarity."

ORIGINAL STORY:

Vic Mensa takes action. Yesterday (Aug. 16), the Chicago rapper announced that he was launching a shoe giveaway for Chicago students after local authorities positioned a "bait truck" ostensibly designed to lure would-be thieves into stealing.

"Last week Chicago Police escorted a 'bait-truck' full of shoes through the South Side of Chicago to lure poor people with FREE NIKES. So we’re filling a truck with shoes to give away to those who need it," Mensa wrote in a tweet, which included a link to an Amazon page where patrons can buy shoes Mensa says will be given to Chi-Town students.

The event, which Mensa is orchestrating with his SaveMoney SaveLife Foundation, has gained the attention of many, including activist Shaun King. King spotlighted the shoe giveaway with a tweet of his own. He has since documented the shoe drive, which has already seen 1,000 pairs of shoes purchased. The SaveMoney SaveLife Foundation aims to purchase 5,000.

This shoe giveaway marks just the latest chapter in Mensa's history of activism and advocacy. Just last week, he served as the Grand Marshall of the 2018 Bud Billiken Parade, which he says managed to give 1,000 backpacks to area youth. Before that, in March, Mensa performed at the March for Our Lives rally for gun control in Washington, D.C.
