1794
Though France abolished slavery, Napoleon, reestablish it in 1802 along with the re-institution of the "Code noir", which prohibited blacks, mulattoes and other people of color from entering French colonial territory or intermarrying with whites.
1913
Born on this day in Tuskegee, Alabama was Rosa Louise McCauley, better known as Rosa Parks.
1969
The People's Movement for the Liberation of Angola (MPLA) begins armed struggle against Portugal in Angola.
1971
The National Guard mobilized to quell rioting in Wilmington, North Carolina until the 9th.. Two people were killed.
1986
Sojourner Truth is issued a stamp by the U.S. Postal Service
1996
J.C. Watts was selected to respond to the state of the union address, becoming the first Black selected to respond to a state of the union address.
The first Black head coach to win a Super Bowl was the one and only Tony Dungy, on this day Feb. 4, 2007. The famous Indianapolis Colts coach led his team to a 29-17 victory over the Chicago Bears in Super Bowl XLI. This was an historic game on many fronts, because the Bears' Lovie Smith and the Colts' Tony Dungy would also became the first African-American head coaches to coach opposing teams in the Super Bowl.
Dungy retired after the 2008-2009 NFL season.
