At the beginning of 2011, we got some very disturbing news as a landmark in the Lake Charles area was destroyed. Exactly 6 months to the date, things are starting to look a little brighter with the process of r ebuilding being on the way. During the Lake Charlres City Council Agenda Meeting on Tuesday, there was some very good news being given to the people of Lake Charles and supporters of the Millennium Park rebuild.

At the August 9 Lake Charles City Council Agenda Meeting, Cooper Cares presented a check for $5,000 to the City of Lake Charles and Rebuilding Millennium Park Committee in support of the Rebuilding Millennium Park project.

Laura Olinde, mother of Cooper, had the following to say:

"Cooper came up with the idea of Cooper Cares because of a desire to volunteer and give back to the community. Cooper wanted to get involved but knew most charities did not need the help of younger people so he created a group where kids would have more of an opportunity to volunteer.

"When the Millennium Park incident occurred, this caught his attention and became a focal point as to an area that the community could use some help. The rest is history. With the help of some of his friends, Cooper Cares came into being and with their efforts were able to raise $5,000 to assist in rebuilding Millennium Park.

"We are very proud of Cooper for having the vision and desire to want to help and be involved in giving back to the community. We are also very appreciative of the great group of kids who have put in their time to help him."

"It doesn't matter what age you are," said Cooper, "you can always make a difference."

Said Mayor Roach:

"Thank you, Cooper Cares, for your donation to the rebuilding of Millennium Park effort.

It is always impressive when you see young people set a goal and attain it and that is just what they have done. We are impressed with the spirit they have demonsttrated in raising these funds for the park. Congratulations."

According to Kay Barnett, Rebuilding Millennium Park chair, "Cooper Cares is a great example of team work at its best and it is doubly impressive that this effort came from our young people. We thank them for all the work they did in bringing this donation to the rebuild effort.

"The fundraising effort is going very well," said Barnett. "As of now, we have raised about 65 percent with a goal of $350,000. All donations are appreciated and can be made online through the Community Foundation of Southwest Louisiana, a non-profit area organization, at www.foundationswla.org; by mailing to: Community Foundation of Southwest Louisiana, P.O. Box 3125, Lake Charles, La. 70602; or delivered to the Foundation at 120 W. Pujo St., Suite 120, Lake Charles."

The community-build dates are October 26 to 30 and November 2 to 6, and individuals/families or businesses/organizations can volunteer by going to the city's web site www.cityoflakecharles.com, clicking on the homepage Rebuilding Millennium Park logo and printing, filling out and mailing or faxing the appropriate volunteer form. The individuals/families volunteer form can also be picked up at the first floor lobby of City Hall, 326 Pujo St.
