If you listen to me on the radio, then you know that for 11 years I was a police officer in Calcasieu Parish. I have been in radio for 35 years now, but for 11 of those years I worked in radio part-time as I was a full-time Deputy for the Calcasieu Parish Sheriff's Office.

You all know that I am a huge supporter of the men and women in law enforcement and their untiring sacrifices they make every day so that you and I can be safe. I worked in the patrol division on the graveyard shift. As you can imagine, some strange things happen at night.

Some of the strangest things that happened to Mike Soileau on patrol in Lake Charles, Louisiana

Upchucking a Bag of Weed

Pulled a car over for running a red light in Lake Charles, and when I approached the vehicle, all I could smell was marijuana. I asked the driver to step out, and as I interviewed him, he wouldn't talk. That is when I realized that he had something in his mouth. He started convulsing and gagging. All of a sudden, a bag of weed came out of his mouth and onto the hood of my patrol car. He almost choked to death trying to swallow the weed in a cellophane bag. He looked at me and immediately turned around and put his hands behind his back so that I could place handcuffs on him.

Bingo Brawler

So when you are a police officer, you have a chance to work off-duty security to make some extra cash.  One day, I was working security at a bingo hall on Highway 14 in Lake Charles when a lady who was playing started screaming obscenities when the bingo caller wouldn't call her number.  I went over to the lady and asked her to refrain from yelling obscenities. She said in a really smart way, "Yeah, okay".  I walked off when she kept on cursing, when the very next number the caller announced. I walked back over to her and told her it was time to leave.  She said, "I am not leaving." Well, she left, alright. In the back of a police car, and ended up getting jail time for the incident.

Ceiling Fan Attack

One time, I received a call about a theft that had occurred at a residence. I arrived on the scene to talk with the complainant and find out what happened. The victim lived in a mobile home, and if you have ever met me, you know I am pretty tall, 6'5 to be exact. I walked into her home to talk with her when her ceiling fan smacked me in the forehead like 5 or six times until I could finally back away. LOL It hurt pretty bad. The struggle was real that day.

Mike gets clotheslined, literally

One night, late like around 3:00 am, I was called out to a location about some suspicious people looking like they were about to break into a business. When I arrived, I saw one guy in the back of the store, and I went to talk with him. He immediately took off running, and I gave pursuit on foot. We ran across a major roadway in Lake Charles and went behind some houses. I was getting close to catching up with the subject when BAM, I flew up in the air and landed on my back on the ground. What had happened was, as soon as I rounded the corner of a house, they had one of those old school clotheslines in the back, and that line caught me right in the face and took me off my feet. Needless to say, the guy got away, and when I got back into my patrol car, I had a massive red line across my forehead where the clothesline took me out LOL.
