Last year, it was a dream season for the McNeese Cowgirls softball team. The team tore up the competition and went 40-21 on the season. More impressive is that the girls went 15-3 in Southland Conference play.
They entered the Southland Conference Tournament and swept the tournament going 3-0 and winning the 2022 Southland conference softball championship. With their win in the conference tournament, the Cowgirls got an automatic bid into the NCAA regional tournament to play for a national championship.
The cowgirls need to win the regional to advance and they were off to a great start by beating Notre Dame 11-+1 in just 5 innings. The cowgirls ultimately went 2-2 in the regional and failed to advance to end their season.
But what a season it was. Now it's time for the 2023 season to begin in about two weeks and the votes are out.
According to Pam Lafosse with McNeese,
McNeese softball has been picked to repeat as Southland Conference Champions, the league announced its preseason poll this Thursday morning.
McNeese received 16 of the possible 18 first-place votes. Coaches and Sports Information Directors were not allowed to vote for their team.
McNeese returns 11 letterwinners (8 position players, 3 pitchers) from its 2022 team that posted a 40-21 overall record and a 15-3 conference record.
Coach Landreneau and his coaching staff are thrilled to have that many players coming back for the 2023 season. The softball team beings the defense of the Southland Conference championship when the season starts on February 10th, 2023.
