Popular Retail Chain Closing 27 Locations, Including One in Texas
Shoppers in Texas might be in for a surprise the next time they head to their local Kohl’s. The popular department store chain just announced it’s shutting down 27 locations across the country—and one of them is right here in the Lone Star State. With major sales drops and shifting shopping trends, this could be just the beginning. Is your favorite store next on the chopping block?
The company has been struggling financially. In the third quarter of 2024, Kohl’s sales dropped nearly 9%, with profits falling from $59 million last year to just $22 million this year. Their stock has also lost more than half its value over the past 12 months.
Kohl’s isn’t the only retail chain facing tough times. Many stores, including Macy’s, have been closing locations as more people shop online. So far in 2024, more than 7,100 stores across the U.S. have shut their doors — a 69% increase compared to last year.
The company says these stores are being shut down because they are “underperforming,” meaning they aren’t making enough money to stay open. Even though Kohl’s has more than 1,150 stores across the country, it is joining other big-name retailers in downsizing due to changes in shopping habits and lower sales.
Kohl’s explained that while most of its stores are still doing well, these 27 locations weren’t meeting company expectations. Employees at the closing stores will either be offered jobs at other Kohl’s stores or given severance pay.
So, which Texas store is closing? Here's what we know...
Kohl’s is closing 27 of its stores across the United States by April. One of those locations is in North Dallas, Texas, at 18224 Preston Road
