🐊 KNGT 🐊 | Louisiana — If you're like me, I make sure that most things I buy go directly into the refrigerator, but did you know thats not always the right thing to do?

In all of my life I’ve thrown out more fruit than I’d like to admit. I always mean to eat healthy, but sometimes life gets in the way... or I forget I bought grapes three weeks ago.

According to the folks over at the Old Farmer’s Almanac, a lot of us are storing fruit the wrong way, and that’s why it goes bad so fast. Yep, your fridge might be ruining your fruit. Here's what I learned (and trust me, it’s kinda wild):

Louisiana Residents Should Keep These Fruits in The Fridge:

  • Berries
  • Grapes

These little guys like it cold, so toss ‘em in the fridge and you’re good to go.

Louisiana Residents Should Keep These Fruits on the Counter

  • Melons
If you put these in the fridge too early, they lose their flavor (how does that work?). So they’re better off chillin’ on the counter, just like we do during a Lake Charles summer.
  • Tropical Fruits (pineapple, mango, papaya)
These fruits come from hotter environments, and they don't like to be cold. Stickin’ them in the fridge is like sendin’ them to the south pole, they won’t ever taste right.
  • Bananas
Please don’t tell me you’re putting bananas in the fridge. Just… don’t.
  • Citrus fruits (oranges, lemons, limes, etc.)
These guys are fine on the counter. You can put them in the fridge, but it’s not really doing much. They won’t ripen any more, unlike apples or peaches.
  • Stone fruits (who calls them this?)
They’re called “stone” fruits because they got a big ol’ pit in the middle. If you put them in the fridge too early, they get all grainy and weird. Leave ‘em out till they’re juicy and ready to drip down your chin like a backyard BBQ gone right.
  • Tomatoes
I saved this one for last because it might shock you, tomatoes don’t belong in the fridge either! They like the sunshine and will taste way better sittin’ on your counter. The cold messes with their insides, kinda like when I try to do yoga in the winter.

So these are some life lessons about fruits and veggies that, let’s be honest, who knew tomatoes had trust issues with the fridge? Next time you’re unpacking groceries, remember, not all fruits are created equal and some fruits just prefer to be warm and cozy.
