Top 10 Things to Know When Moving To Lake Charles, Louisiana
🐊 KNGT 🐊 | Louisiana — Growing up in Southwest Louisiana, not much catches me off guard anymore. I’ve seen folks cook up a pot of gumbo during a hurricane and fry just about anything you can think of. But the other day I started thinking... what if someone from out of town moved here? What would surprise them?
First off, life moves a little different down here. We like to take our time. Folks wave at everybody, even if they don’t know you. If you pass someone on the road and don’t wave, well, they’re gonna talk about it. We’re just raised to be friendly.
Now let’s talk about the food. If you don’t like spicy stuff or seafood, you better learn quick. We eat boudin, crawfish, gumbo, and things that most people wouldn’t even try. And yes, we have drive-thru daiquiri shops, and they’re totally legal.

The weather? Oh boy. It can be hot, cold, rainy, and sunny, all within 24 hours. And don’t forget about hurricane season. Around here, if a storm is coming, we either cook a big meal or head to Texas.
You’re also gonna hear folks talk with a little Cajun flair. We say things like “cher” (that means sweetheart), and “lagniappe” (that means a little something extra). It’s just how we talk.
So if you’re moving to Lake Charles, we welcome you with open arms! But don’t say I didn’t warn you.
