The U.S. Department of State often updates its travel advisories to keep Americans safe. These warnings are based on things like health risks, terrorism, crime, and political unrest. Sometimes, new laws or events in a country can raise safety concerns, like unfair imprisonment or protests.

Travel advisories are ranked from Level 1 to Level 4:

  • Level 1: Exercise Normal Precautions – Safe to visit, just be aware, like you would at home.
  • Level 2: Exercise Increased Caution – Some extra risks, like petty crime or health concerns.
  • Level 3: Reconsider Travel – More serious dangers like civil unrest or higher crime rates.
  • Level 4: Do Not Travel – These countries are very dangerous due to crime, kidnapping, terrorism, or unstable governments.

The United States Department of State regularly issues travel advisories for Americans to help keep them safe during their vacations. There are four levels of advisories: exercise normal precautions, exercise increased caution, reconsider travel and do not travel. These are nine of the 19 destinations under a Level 4: DO NOT TRAVEL advisory.
