This black history month we salute African Americans who've made American history.

Have you had eye surgery before?  Was it to correct cataract disease?  If so, you were treated with another invention by an African American.  Today, we salute Dr. Patricia Bath, the first African American woman doctor to receive a patent for a medical invention.

Today we salute a black inventor who was really ahead of his time.  One of his inventions is used by billions of people every minute of the day.  In fact, it would be absolute total chaos without it and driving would be near impossible.

Today, we solute shoe making machine inventor Jan Ernst Matzeliger.  Jan was born in Paramaribo, a trading post started by the Dutch, the capital and largest city of Suriname.  His father was a Dutch engineer and his mother a black Surinamese slave.
