50 Cent, Snoop Dogg and More Condemn Jussie Smollett After Arrest for Staging Attack
On Thursday morning (Feb. 21), Jussie Smollett was indicted on suspicion of filing a false report. According to Chicago Police Superintendent Eddie Johnson, the Empire star paid two men $3,500 to stage the alleged attack on him last month, "taking advantage of the pain and anger of racism to promote his career."
When reports of the initial attack came out back in January, where Smollett alleged two men yelled racist and homophobic slurs, tied a rope around his neck and poured something on him, rappers like 50 Cent and T.I. immediately came to the defense of Smollett and sent their well-wishes. Now, many are speaking out against him in light of the new details.
50 Cent and Snoop Dogg have both joked about the turn of events via Instagram. Others took a deeper approach.
"Jussie is a by product for the times many folks this millennium have clamored for," Chuck D of Public Enemy wrote on Twitter. "It’s called use sht to get the short cut. In this case .Race BHM. Still this society sucks it BIG. Now HE got a name. Watch his value rise doing a lil jail time. The dysfunctional USAer co-sign."
Following his arrest on Thursday, the judge granted a $100,000 bail. Smollett bonded out for $10,000, and is due back in court on March 14. The actor could be facing one to three years in prison if found guilty of the felony charge of disorderly conduct.
