Bobby Shmurda Refuses to Join Meek Mill’s Fight for Criminal Justice Reform
Bobby Shmurda's seen too much police brutality to believe he can change the perceived issues with the criminal justice system, so he doesn't plan on trying to.
In an interview with Sirius XM's Swaggy Sie, which was posted Monday (March 25), the New York City rapper, who could be released from prison next year, admitted that he won't be joining Meek Mill's battle for criminal justice reform.
"I tell people all the time I respect what he's doing but I can't do it though, you understand?" Bobby says in the video. "I haven't talked to the kid but I'm ain't about to be sitting here protesting and politicking for no muthafuckin' cops because them muthafuckas don't care."
Shmurda, born Ackquille Pollard, goes on to the say that he doesn't believe that simply talking about or bringing awareness to criminal justice reform will influence change. However, he does agree that only real action like the new legislation from the Philadelphia Supreme Court will make a difference. Although he's not pledging to report to the forefront of the battle, Shmurda does claim that he's open to having a conversation with Meek about his Reform Alliance, which he recently launched with Jay-Z.
It's been four years since Bobby Shmurda, Rowdy Rebel and the rest of the GS9 crew were arrested at Quad recording studio in Times Square. After being moved around to several correctional facilities, Shmurda has managed to rack up at least 11 violations including drug possession, fighting and possessing a shank.
Nonetheless, the rapper is reportedly in great spirits as the date for his parole hearing steadily approaches. If all goes well in August 2020, Shmurda might be eligible for release as early as December 2020.
"Great visit with my stinky.....the count down continues 22 months to go," Pollard's mother Leslie wrote on Instagram after visiting her son back in January. "Chewy is in great spirits he sends his Love and he can not wait to be back to work."
