Lake Charles ACTS Theatre Brings ‘The Shark Is Broken’ to Stage – This Weekend
KNGT | Lake Charles, LA — You know, sometimes we go around Lake Charles so much that we forget about some of the locations that have been a part of this town for many generations.
I was reminded of all the folks who have passed through the doors of ACTS Theatre throughout the years when someone mentioned it the other day. performers. parents. grandparents. Children. volunteers. People searching for a fun night out.
If you haven't been, ACTS Theatre is located in Lake Charles you are missing out on this hidden gem, Its located at 1 Reid Street for over 60 years.

The History of the ACTs Theatre in Lake Charles, Louisiana
In 1965, eight locals realized the wasnt a real theater-focused organization in Southwest Louisiana. Thats when plans for the theatre came to life. They started and organized what is now considered the ACTs Theatre (Artists Civic Theatre & Studio, or ACTS for short).
They have performed in comedies, dramas, musicals, children's events, and youth programs over the years. There were even scripts developed especially for ACTS youth workshops that were performed there.
When you consider it, that's quite awesome.
Thousands of people from Southwest Louisiana most likely had their first experience performing on that stage. A few of them pursued careers in the arts. Others just gained self-assurance and unforgettable moments.
And let's face it, everyone has a friend who participated in every school play during their childhood. They most likely attended ACTS for a while.
The Shark Is Broken, is a somewhat unique production by ACTS Theatre, and is coming to Lake Charles this weekend. Now, if you were a fan of the Jaws Movie, this is for you.
Without giving away to much, the play centers on actors Roy Scheider, Richard Dreyfuss, and Robert Shaw while they wait for filming to resume. They quarrel, make jokes, gamble, consume alcohol, and ponder whether they will ever see the entire film. They had no idea that fifty years later, people would still be viewing the movie they had made.
I love locations like ACTS because they serve as a reminder that entertainment doesn't always have to originate from large cities or venues. Sometimes it occurs in our own backyard. And after more than six decades, ACTS Theatre is still giving Southwest Louisiana a place to laugh, learn, perform, and make memories.
