(KNGT-FM) - Mardi Gras season in Louisiana is one of the best times of the year. The parades, the music, and the food are all part of the fun. But lately, there always seems to be that one float rider who thinks they are Drew Brees launching a touchdown pass, firing beads into the crowd like they are trying to win MVP.

Now, a new bill has been proposed that would punish riders who throw beads or other items in a way that could hurt someone. Here is what you need to know.

This proposal comes after several problems during this year’s Carnival season.

Per reports from across the State, there were a few instances where someone was hurt or injured. On Mardi Gras, a rider on a Zulu Social Aid & Pleasure Club float threw a bottle that hit a 4-year-old child. Earlier in the season, 41 riders from the Krewe of Carrollton were removed from their float after police said they were throwing beads aggressively toward officers.

Sylvia Taylor, a state representative from LaPlace, has filed House Bill 397. The bill would punish Mardi Gras float riders who throw beads or other items in a way that could hurt someone.

Consequences/Fines Under Proposed House Bill 397

Under the bill, float riders could face a $500 fine for reckless throwing. If someone suffers a minor injury, the penalty could increase to $1,000 and up to six months in jail. If a serious injury happens, the fine would be at least $2,000, and the rider could face one to three years in prison. The bill says riders would be punished if they knowingly or carelessly throw objects in a way that could reasonably cause harm.

House Bill 397 is not a law yet. It still must go through the legislative process. Lawmakers will take it up when the regular session begins on March 9th. For now, it remains a proposal aimed at making Mardi Gras parades safer for everyone. We'll keep you updated when we find out more information!
