(KMDL-FM) Depending on which economist you talk to, the recently added or increased tariffs by the U.S. on imported goods have either been a good thing or a bad thing. Based on reports, a lot of money has been collected. There has also been a lot of extra money spent because of the higher prices associated with those tariffs. Now there is a proposal to send some of that tariff money back to you.

The reason at least one lawmaker believes it is necessary to return the money to you is simple. The United States Supreme Court ruled that the tariffs that were imposed were unconstitutional. So, based on the court's ruling that money was collected illegally, yet you and I still paid higher prices. The proposed American Consumer Tariff Rebate Act of 2026 would rectify the situation.

The legislation's sponsor is Congressman Henry Cuellar of Texas. Congressman Cuellar is proposing that tariff rebate checks be sent to all American households with an adjusted gross income of $400,000 or less. I am guessing that's most of us, right?

The Congressman's plan states that the actual amount of each rebate check would be determined by how many Americans qualify for the program. Cuellar ran the numbers on a hypothetical constituent in his Texas district, and the numbers suggested an average payout for a single-filer would be $1,020.00.

If you use that number as a starting point, that would make the amount that couples who do "married filing jointly" for their tax returns equate to $2,040.00. A head of household under the Cuellar plan would receive a stipend or rebate of $1,530.

Where Would The Rebate Money Come From?

If you're wondering where all of this money will come from, the answer would be the "unconstitutional tariffs" that have been collected so far. We mentioned that it was a lot of money; one estimate sets that figure at $231.4 billion.

Again, under Congressman Cuellar's proposal, you'd get $1,020.00.  And for households with children, the plan would provide an additional $125 for each qualifying child.

The proposal has been submitted to the House Ways and Means Committee for discussion and debate. Which is a bureaucratic way of telling you, "don't hold your breath," this is going to take a lot of time.  And it may not come to fruition at all.

When Might Americans Actually See A Tariff Rebate Check?

But don't be surprised if suddenly a government check shows up in your mailbox or is directly deposited in your bank account just ahead of the mid-term elections. When it comes to getting re-elected, our politicians will graciously give us back our money and make us feel like we should be grateful.

And to be honest, there are a lot of families in Louisiana that could use some extra cash. Perhaps your family is one of those that could use a financial break.
