A classroom at Lafayette Middle School will be without its regular teacher today and for the next several days as that teacher waits out a self-quarantine. The decision to self-quarantine was made out of an overabundance of caution in response to concerns about the coronavirus pandemic.

Lafayette Parish School officials did confirm that the teacher had returned to Acadiana after recent travels outside of the country. The teacher notified school officials and the decision was made to follow the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommendations.

Parents and students were notified of the status of the teacher who had been on campus and in the classroom since returning from travel. Lafayette School System officials say that the teacher will not return to school until they have been cleared by medical professionals.

Meanwhile, students have been moved from that particular teacher's classroom to another location. The classroom will undergo disinfection before any other students or faculty are allowed to return.

So far four other teachers in the area have self-quarantined after travels abroad.  None of those educators have displayed any signs or symptoms of illness. Just to clarify, there have been no coronavirus cases reported or confirmed in Louisiana.
