Local Officials & Law Enforcement Call On Everyone, Mask-Up
It's not hard to understand or do... wear a mask(bandanna, face shield) or ANY FACE COVERING while out in public, stay away from large group gatherings. Why? To stop the transmission of the coronavirus, which causes the COVID-19 disease. It is literally that simple. Wash your hands or use hand sanitizer as often as you can and don't touch your face when in public. How hard is that? Clearly not too difficult because, it's working nicely for other nations. Europe, Korea, Canada and more have enjoyed total mask/social distancing compliance among their citizens and as a result, they're winning the battle against coronavirus.
Outside of medical and scientific evidence, there are examples around the world that wearing masks and social distancing has made a significant difference. Right now America's coronavirus cases are soaring to epic proportions. That is a fact. Governor Edwards reported Louisiana "has lost ground" on containing the deadly virus. The state has seen an alarming increase in COVID-19 cases since the beginning of June. This is in direct consequence of reopening, relaxing social distancing and widespread non-compliance of the simple life-saving request to wear masks in public and avoid large gatherings.
To that point, The Calcasieu Parish Executive Policy Group, comprised of the Mayors of all Municipalities in the Parish (DeQuincy, Iowa, Lake Charles, Sulphur, Vinton, Westlake), Calcasieu Parish Police Jury President, as well as the Calcasieu Parish Sheriff issued the following statement concerning the current health crisis facing SWLA:
The recommendations from respected members of the medical and scientific community are clear and consistent. The Centers for Disease Control, the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, United States Surgeon General, Louisiana Department of Health, and the vast majority of the Southwest Louisiana medical community all agree that protective face masks lower the transmission of COVID-19 and that properly wearing a face mask is safe.
Southwest Louisiana has recently seen a steep rise in COVID-19 cases. Our medical workers are already feeling the increased strain, and this will become exponentially worse if we do not improve our adherence to effective health practices. It has never been more important for citizens to use caution, practice social distancing, wash hands frequently, and wear face masks.
We thank the many local businesses and citizens who are already taking these precautions. Wearing a mask helps protect you and your neighbor. We fervently and confidently advocate for mask wearing throughout Southwest Louisiana.
Local officials and law enforcement are calling upon local businesses and employees to adhere to the governor’s recent executive order which mandates “all businesses and organizations shall require that any owner or employee having interaction or contact with the public shall wear a mask or a face covering.” Reducing incidence of the virus will require compliance with these legal measures in place as well as diligence on the part of all our citizens.
