As we begin 2021, some new laws go into effect in Louisiana. The one getting much of the attention is tort reform. Motorists involved in lawsuits will now find it a bit tougher to win big damage awards.

Business lobbying groups pushed for the change in an effort to bring car insurance premiums down. The new law is the most high-profile of two dozen statutes taking effect as we begin 2021. It's aimed at lessening the money people can get from insurance companies and businesses in car-wreck lawsuits. Democratic Gov. John Bel Edwards, the majority-GOP Legislature and businesses lobbyists struck a deal on the civil litigation changes in a June special session, but set the start date for January 1.

Another new law you might want to know about deals with new drivers. Details on parking must now be included in all Louisiana drivers education classes. The parking questions will also show up on the driver's license test.
