In the past people suffering from mental illness were misunderstood, mistreated, misdiagnosed and in a lot of cases sent off the mental institutions to be forgotten. Today this form of ignorance is no longer the norm, thanks to advocacy groups like the National Alliance on Mental Illness of Southwest Louisiana (NAMI SWLA).

Over the past 30 years a lot of progress has been made in the lives of people living with mental illness.  Through education, support groups and advocacy services society is learning how except and respect those affected by this illness.  Though more can always be done, a lot has been accomplished in the way of understanding and tolerance.

Mental Illness Awareness week is Oct. 5-11, 2014 and NAMI SWLA will host a celebration dinner which will review 30 years of progress in the services offered in Southwest Louisiana and the nation as a whole.  The objective of the NAMI SWLA dinner is to recognize outstanding leaders in our community for advocating, educating and getting involved in mental illness support programs

At the this years dinner, a guest speaker will provide an educational presentation, attendees will be informed about education classes, advocacy issues, and future scheduled events. Free mental health educational materials and support group information will be given out and an overview of improvements made in the mental health field locally and nationally will be announced.

The NAMI SWLA 30th Anniversary Dinner will take place Tuesday October 7th at 6:00 PM at the Governor's Mansion, located at 1025 Broad Street.  For more info contact Anastasia Armstrong 337-433-0219.
