It's that time of the year for live horse racing in Southwest Louisiana. Delta Downs Racetrack in Vinton, Louisiana has just kicked off its 2022-2023 Thoroughbred Season.

The season got underway last night and will run through February 25, 2023. That's 84 total days of the heart-pounding live Thoroughbred racing action right here in our own backyard.

Some of the featured nights of racing according to track announcer Don Stevens are,

During the season, Delta Downs will offer a stakes schedule that features 22 races and a total of $1.985 million in total purse money. The track will also roll out exciting weekly promotions in the OTB for fans to participate in throughout the 21-week season.

The stakes activity kicks off on opening weekend with the $100,000 Magnolia on Friday, October 7 and the $100,000 Gold Cup on Saturday, October 8. Both races are restricted to Louisiana-bred horses with the Magnolia featuring 3-year-old and up fillies and mares.

Now you need to mark your calendars for the richest night of racing during the 84-day season. It's on Saturday, February 4 when Delta Downs Racetrack hosts another edition of Louisiana Premier Night. The headlining race of that night will be the $150,000 Louisiana Premier Night Championship. This race features 4-year-olds and racing 1-1/16 miles.

Live racing runs Wednesday through Saturday evenings with post-times starting at 4:55 pm each evening with a few exceptions during the holidays.

Remember it's free to attend and is open to all ages. For persons 21 and under, you can watch the races outside right next to the track. So make plans to go see these awesome horses in action this season.
