A gunman opened fire inside a grocery store in Opelousas on Tuesday evening wounding two people.

According to Opelousas police, the incident happened just after 6:00 pm at the Cash Saver grocery store located at 1305 Heather Street.

Public Information Officer Major Mark Guidry told KLFY an initial investigation has revealed that the suspect and a male victim began arguing inside the store when the argument grew violent and the gunman opened fire. The suspect then fled the area on foot.

Guidry said that both victims, one of whom was an innocent bystander, were taken to a local hospital with injuries to their lower extremities.

Investigators are reviewing store surveillance and more information will be released at a later date.
