Louisiana Drivers: Turning On Your Hazard Lights in the Rain Is Illegal
LOUISIANA - We seemingly see it every time it starts to downpour. A bevy of Louisiana drivers turn on their hazard lights.
Don't do it. It's illegal and unsafe.

Louisiana State Police continuously remind motorists that hazard lights (flashers) should only be used if your vehicle is disabled in the roadway or on the shoulder. There is no need to use your flashers while driving in the rain.
Why Using Hazard Lights in the Rain Is Dangerous
Flashing hazard lights can make it difficult for other drivers to see your turn signals or brake lights. Or, it can cause other drivers to think you are stopped or stalled in the roadway.

Consider this too. A car that is actually stalled with lights flashing could get hit by a driver who doesn't anticipate proper braking distance because they think the car is moving.
What Louisiana Law Actually Says About Hazard Lights
The bottom line is that it is ultimately illegal. The prohibition of driving with hazard lights is part of Louisiana Statute 32:327 regarding special restrictions on lamps. It reads as follows:
Flashing lights are prohibited except on authorized emergency vehicles, school buses, or on any vehicle as a means of indicating a right or left turn, or the presence of a vehicular traffic hazard requiring unusual care in approaching, overtaking or passing.
Penalties for Illegal Hazard Light Use in Louisiana
There are consequences for driving with your hazard lights on. Violations for unauthorized or improper lighting under the Louisiana State Legistlature generally carry the following penalties:
- First Offense: Up to $175 fine or imprisonment for up to 30 days (or both).
- Second or Subsequent Offenses: Up to $500 or imprisonment for up to 90 days (or both).
The bottom line is we shouldn't use hazard lights while driving and discretion is the better part of valor. Be smart on the roadways when it's raining, have patience, and arrive alive.
