Weather Service – Louisiana Severe Threat Looming Monday
For the most part the only affect Mother Nature has had on Louisiana that's out of the ordinary on this Saturday has been fog For those who live in Lafayette, Lake Charles, or Baton Rouge you might be waking up to foggy conditions on Sunday too. But, the outlook for the remainder of today, Saturday, and Sunday calls for a mix of clouds and sun and seasonable temperatures.
When Are Strong Storms Forecast For Louisiana?
The Storm Prediction Center is suggesting in its forecast that the entire state of Louisiana will be under the gun for severe storms during the day on Monday. As of now, the SPC has the threat listed as "Marginal".
For the official definition of what that means you can look here. But in layman's terms, we usually experience at least moderate to heavy storms if not severe storms when placed under a "marginal" risk. But please remember, that's an observation about a model, neither are official forecasts.
What Is The Official Forecast For Louisiana On Monday
The prognostication from the National Weather Service Office in Lake Charles suggests that Monday morning won't have as many weather issues as Monday afternoon and evening might. The forecast calls for a 40% chance of showers in the morning hours. That ramps up to an 80% chance of storms by Monday afternoon and evening.
What is Louisiana's Flooding Threat on Monday?
One of the most damaging aspects of strong storms is the potential for flooding and flash flooding that they bring. The Weather Prediction Center has placed Louisiana under a marginal risk for an excessive rainfall event because of the forecast threat on Monday. An excessive rain event means that the water is falling faster than the drainage can keep up with it. That's when you get flooded streets and ponding of water on roadways.
It does appear as though the forecast across Louisiana will calm down considerably on Tuesday. Wednesday should be a nice day too. Rain threats will re-enter the state by Thursday and the possibility of more storms will exist as we move closer to next weekend.
