Here’s What the Streets Are Saying About Kanye West’s Controversial Comments on Slavery and Trump
Kanye West’s return to the spotlight recently has rubbed many of his fans the wrong way, while others have praised the rapper for standing true to his beliefs. XXL hit the streets of New York to find out what the people have to say about ’Ye's controversial comments on slavery and his support of President Trump.
Before we get to the streets, here's a rundown on what Yeezy's been up to, causing a polarizing stir among his fans. Since popping back up on Twitter in mid-April, the Chicago native has provided his fans with a number of buzz-worthy album announcements, philosophical theories and previews of his upcoming Yeezy brand collections.
’Ye’s return and outlandish remarks have also transcended the world of social media. He recently appeared in two highly publicized interviews—one with Charlamagne Tha God and another on TMZ Live—and shared his support for President Donald Trump while also showing love to a number of conservative media personalities like Candace Owens.
While Kanye's political stance earned him a bit of heat among hip-hop fans, it wasn't until ’Ye made his slavery remarks on TMZ Live that had everyone up in arms. "When you hear about slavery for 400 years, for 400 years?! That sounds like a choice," Kanye said. "Like, you was there for 400 years and it was all of y'all?"
The Chicago MC's controversial comments on slavery marked the last straw for a lot of Kayne fans who were disappointed with the rapper's recent actions and commentary. While he clarified his slavery statements ("To make myself clear," he tweeted. "Of course I know that slaves did not get shackled and put on a boat by free will. My point is for us to have stayed in that position even though the numbers were on our side means that we were mentally enslaved."), the online community didn't hold back on their thoughts of the new ’Ye, sharing their ill feelings and letdowns for his current stance.
With the online world divided over Kanye's remarks and support, XXL hit the streets of NYC to find out people's thoughts and views on the new Kanye and his recent actions.
