For many in Louisiana, hunting and fishing are not just pastimes, it's how they earn their living. That's why we as occasional sportsmen and women need to learn to protect not only our environment but the jobs that this way of life sustains.

September 24th has been proclaimed as National Hunting and Fishing Day and in Louisiana, the Department of Wildlife and Fisheries has a series of events planned for those who enjoy that kind of outdoor activity.

Those who attend will learn not only better ways to be a better steward of our state's natural resources, but you'll probably learn at least a little bit more about how to improve your next hunting or fishing adventure.

There are National Hunting and Fishing Day events scheduled throughout the state on September 24th. Many will feature shooting activities, fishing ponds, and even information on how to be a better and safer boater on the state's waterways.

Here are where events are being hosted, according to the Department of Wildlife Website.

Teal season is starting, dove season is already underway, and it won't be long until many of us will be spending at least part of our weekend in a deer stand. Make sure you're a well-informed sportsman before you take that first step into our great Louisiana outdoors.

Many of the activities at these events are free to experience and there is special consideration given to younger sportsmen and women too. If the future of Louisiana's outdoors is going to be protected, we've got to teach today's generation what our fathers and grandfathers taught us.
