Louisiana Native Gets Largest Signing Bonus in NFL History

Dak Prescott has just been offered one of the most lucrative contracts in NFL history.

Dak was born in Sulphur on July 29, 1993. The 27-year-old franchise quarterback moved to Mississippi, where he attended high school and was a breakout star at Mississippi State University.

Prescott was drafted by the Dallas Cowboys in the 2016 NFL Draft in the fourth round as the 153rd pick. Prescott went on to win the NFL's Offensive Rookie of the Year honors and was selected to the Pro Bowl.

Fast-forward a few years to last season, and Dak was asking for a huge contract the Cowboys were reluctant to work out in the offseason. They gave him the Franchise Tag. The franchise tag is essentially a one-year contract that guarantees a predetermined salary for players. The salary amount is set by averaging the top five salaries by position for the previous league year or if it’s higher, 120% of a player’s salary the previous season.

In week five of last season, Dak suffered a gruesome ankle injury that put his playing career into question. Since then his rehibilitation has gone great and he's back into playing form.

Yesterday, Adam Schefter tweeted that Prescott is guaranteed $126 million and will average $42 million a year for the first three years of the deal.  Plus, he will receive the largest signing bonus in NFL history.

Not too bad for a local boy. Congrats, Dak. You deserve it. However, I have to be honest. I was hoping Dallas wouldn't pay him and the Saints would have a chance at signing him. Our offense is already designed for a short (in NFL standards) quarterback, so he would've been perfect to replace Drew under center.
