Mariah Carey Tells Story of The Notorious B.I.G. Almost Appearing on “Honey (Remix)”
Mariah Carey has a number of notable crossover hip-hop collabs in her long singing career. One of the most notable has to be the Bad Boy version of her 1997 "Honey (Remix)." The original, produced by Diddy, Q-Tip and Stevie J, featured Ma$e and The LOX, but according to the singing legend, The Notorious B.I.G. was actually supposed to appear on the track.
Carey sat down for an interview with DJ Suss One on Power 105. 1 on Wednesday (Nov. 21) to promote her new album Caution. Between talking about the album and reminiscing about old times, the topic of Biggie's near appearance on the "Honey (Remix)" was brought up around the 11:25 mark.
"That was unfortunately during that time [Big passed]," Carey recalled, noting that they didn't start off on the best of terms.
"He had the 'Dreams' record out at the time," she said, referring to the song where Big fantasizes about industry women but takes a shot at Carey with the line, "Mariah Carey kinda scary." "I was always like, 'Why did he have to say that?' Then someone, I'm not going to mention, a prominent rapper, said, 'He meant that as a compliment.' I was like, 'Okay, if you said it, I'll take it that way.'"
Things were looking up after Carey and Big talked things out. "Puff put me on the phone with [Biggie]. I don't even know if [Puff] remembers this. This was at the Hit Factory. He was like, 'I didn't mean it, it's all love.' And he was gonna get on the record and he passed away."
Mariah believes the remix was just supposed to have Biggie on it, but Ma$e and The LOX were added after the tragedy.
She added, "[His] swag was just so enormous, it was just like everything was all love after that [phone conversation]."
